Dear parents of students and students entering 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades!
Last summer we introduced a gratifyingly successful performing arts program for our friends in the
elementary schools. Since theatre is a passion we share, we are eager to offer SPAE (Summer Performing
Arts Explorations) again for 2012! In the past few years, young players have joined the Leland and Gray
Players in our fall musicals. We've found that these kids shine when they are acting; thus we thought
they'd enjoy the chance to keep performing through the summer.
In our area where summer opportunities in the performing arts are limited, SPAE is an excellent
opportunity for students around the district to gather together and see the many benefits of the performing
arts!
We intend to incorporate many different aspects of theatre in our program. At the end of the two-
week period, all are invited to see our final production. The show is the tool to teach theatre arts
including, but not limited to: acting, singing, dancing, set design, and backstage/stage crew work. The
show will be a reward, but really, it is the process of working on the show that will offer the richest
learning opportunities.
Ann Landenberger, director of theatre arts at Leland and Gray, will supervise the camp again this year.
She will also direct interested students in the technical aspects of theatre, which will be especially
exciting since we'll be working in our new space! She will help direct the kids in creating a set and
costumes that will be used for the final production. The primary support for the program, she will oversee
its operation-safety, security, business and content.
As part of the program, we are inviting local professionals and experienced graduates to lead special
workshops with the kids. Composer and Leland and Gray Music Director Ron Kelley will offer vocal
workshops; Journey East alumna and Brattleboro School of Dance performer Nicole Thomas will lead
dance and movement workshops; designer and actor, Gordon Landenberger (L&G '07), will be back to
offer more workshops in set design, and Claire and I will, once again, direct. Working with guest artists
give participants a chance to meet people who have excelled in the arts they love. Over forty elementary
schoolers participated in The Wizard of Oz, and/or Oliver! at Leland and Gray, and sixteen students
participated in SPAE last year. We hope that their passion for theatre will inspire them and others to
join our program. Because it involves many towns, it also serves as an excellent opportunity for children
to begin working with each other in preparation for their move to Leland and Gray.
We would like this to primarily be a way for us to give back to the community, and so we consider this
endeavor community service. The fee listed will cover other program expenses and stipends. If it is too high
for your family, please let Ms. Landenberger know what you can afford to pay.

Sincerely,
Karlie Kauffeld and Claire Zukas, Leland and Gray Players, class of '09
